In Australia there are over 4000 species of ants! You only really need to worry about a few and most of those have been introduced so they really are pests that should not be here.
2.5-3 mm long and intensely black in colour with a sometimes subtle, purplish-green iridescence. They are smaller and stockier than the White footed house ant and produce a distinctive strong odour when crushed. However the smell is reportedly undetectable to some.
These ants bite, but don’t sting and are an introduced species. They nest outside around the edges of paths, rockeries, and other structures, and also commonly nest indoors in ceilings, cavity walls and subfloor areas. They prefer sweet foods, but will eat a variety of foodstuffs.
2.8-3.5mm long are shiny black with white feet. In general they nest outdoors and prefer sweet foods but will also eat proteins in the cooler months.
1.5-3 mm light brown in colour with a darker abdomen. They bite and are an introduced species. The Singapore ant are attracted to plastics and can cause damage to electrical wiring and have been known to cause electrical fires.
1.5-3 mm are slender and brown, they are often seen on the trunks of trees and the base of shrubs. Their nests are often shallow and just under paving areas.
Here are 4 basic guidelines for preventing ants.
The most common ant to enter homes is the aptly named the black house ant. Ants are a nuisance, some bite and all are just an annoyance particularly when they get into your food or other places that they should not be. Be on the lookout for single ants as these quite often are scout ants seeking out food. Once food is located the rest of the colony won’t be far behind.
Close off Entry Points
Ants are able to enter your home through very small gaps 1-2mm so look for these entry points around door and window frames, weep holes in brickwork or even sub floors and under eaves and awnings and seal them therefore eliminating entry points.
Inspect Garden Beds
Inspect garden beds, landscape ornamentals and plants around your home (e.g. palms and succulents) as these may be attracting ants closer to your home as sources for water and food.
